Business Communication Practice
Attend the local community or campus meeting to observe group decision making.
You will use your observations and notes to answer the exercises below, so read these questions carefully before attending the meeting. Check the agenda in advance to make sure the meeting will involve discussion items that will require group action (such as voting).
1.      Evaluate the meeting with regard to (a) the leader’s ability to clearly articulate the meeting’s goals, (b) the leader’s ability to engage members in a meaningful discussion, (c) the group’s dynamic, and (d) the group’s listening skill. Prepare a memo summarizing your evaluation.
2.      How did the group make decision? Did they vote? Did they reach decision by consensus? Did they naysayer get the opportunity to voice their objections?
3.      How well did the individual participants listen? How could you tell?
4.      Did any of participants change their mind during the meeting? Why might that have happened?
5.      Identify some of the communication barrier that you observed during the meeting.
6.      Analyze a copy of  the meeting agenda. Did they have a meeting start time or end time? Was the agenda specific enough so that, as an outsider, you knew that items they were going to discuss? If not, how would you improve the agenda?
7.      Did it appear that any of the meeting members had personal hidden agenda? How could you tell?
8.      Compare the notes you took during the meeting with those of your partner. What difference do you notice? How do you account for these difference?
